Holiday shoppers will get one gift early: Parking at downtown meters and automated pay stations will be free each day after 1 p.m. from Monday, Dec. 8 through Christmas.
The break in enforcement is meant to encourage shoppers to head downtown and support area businesses.
Rather than allow free parking all day, the city opted to allow it from 1 p.m. on to discourage peope who live or work downtown from parking in metered spaces all day.
People are still asked to observe the time limits listed for each space, and the city asks that shoppers who think they’ll be downtown longer than two hours park at 8-hour metered spaces or on the ground floor of the parkade, the parking garage located at 1300 Commercial St.

Part of the parkade is reserved for monthly permit parking, which will still be enforced throughout the break.
Parking is always free on weekends and holidays.
