10,000 now dead from COVID-19 in Washington as Friday shows another record day of cases
More than 10,000 Washingtonians have now died of COVID-19, the state Department of Health announced Friday as the pandemic continued another surge through the state.
The Washington state Department of Health reported 17,091 new COVID-19 cases and 30 deaths Friday, bringing statewide totals from the illness caused by the coronavirus to 931,071 and 10,004 deaths.
Those numbers are up from 913,980 cases and 9,974 deaths as of Thursday. The case total includes 110,839 infections listed as probable. DOH revises previous case and death counts daily.
It was the third day in a row case numbers set a record.
Hospitalizations
As of Dec. 29, the date with the most recent complete data, 133 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were admitted to Washington state hospitals.
Case rates
For the past seven days, Washington has had an increasing case rate of 852.3 per 100,000 people.
The national rate for the same period was 1,295.8 per 100,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaccine
According to the CDC, more than 12.7 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Washington.
On the national level, more than 516.5 million shots of the approved vaccines have been given, according to CDC statistics.
As of Friday, 62.8% of Washington residents and 62.4% of the adult U.S. population have been fully vaccinated.
County numbers
According to DOH data, King County, with the state’s highest population, continues to have the highest numbers in Washington, with 228,166 cases and 2,161 deaths. Pierce County, second in population, is second in cases, with 125,304. Pierce County has the second-highest number of deaths, at 1,033, according to DOH, which counts deaths differently than the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
All counties in Washington have at least 200 cases. Only six of the state’s 39 counties have case counts of fewer than 1,000.
U.S. and world numbers
There have been more than 59 million confirmed coronavirus cases and 836,098 deaths from the virus in the United States as of Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has the highest total number of reported cases and deaths of any nation.
More than 5.4 million people have died from the disease worldwide. Global cases exceed 302.4 million.
