It may be a virtual graduation, but Bellingham seniors will have their caps and gowns

Bellingham and Options high school classes of 2020 graduates picked up caps and gowns in the Bellingham High School parking lot Wednesday, May 27.

Director of school safety and emergency management Jonah Stinson planned the process to ensure people stayed in cars and observed social distancing, according to Bellingham Public Schools spokesperson Dana Smith in an email to The Bellingham Herald.

Sehome and Squalicum seniors picked up caps and gowns last week. “It’s been very organized,’’ Smith said, adding “it was a wonderful time for seniors and staff to see each other at a safe distance.”

The district continues to work on a virtual graduation, according to Bellingham Public Schools Superintendent Greg Baker during an online conversation with the community Wednesday.

On May 13 the district posted that each high school will hold a virtual graduation ceremony with speakers, music and graduate photos at 6 p.m. on June 12.

The superintendent’s name was corrected May 29, 2020.
