With Whatcom events canceled by COVID-19, here are two places to mark Memorial Day 2020

The Avenue of Flags display at Greenacres Memorial Park continues for Memorial Day 2020 weekend as COVID-19 closures have led to the cancellation of other traditional events.

Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, is a federal holiday honoring people who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Bellingham’s Memorial Park, at King and E. Maryland streets behind Sunnyland Elementary School, features a walk remembering Whatcom County’s war dead. It remains open but city officials ask people comply with social distancing guidelines and keep moving when visiting.

“Because of distancing regulations, we, unfortunately, are not able to have volunteer help for the set up and take down of the flags. Our cemetery office will be open over Memorial Day weekend to assist with locating graves and flags,” the Moles Farewell Tribunes website wrote.

The Festival of Flags is held at Greenacres Memorial Park, 5700 Northwest Drive, Ferndale.
