Whatcom County continues to see coronavirus spread with 3 new cases reported Sunday
Three more residents tested positive for COVID-19, the Whatcom County Health Department reported Sunday, May 3, but no deaths related to the coronavirus were reported.
The county now has 317 confirmed cases, according to health department statistics.
The Whatcom County Health Department reported on April 28 that the number of deaths had reached 28 and the number remained consistent until a second update of the department’s website Sunday. The number of deaths related to the new coronavirus in Whatcom County is now listed at 27.
According to Health Department representative Ali Jensen, a person who tested positive for COVID-19 died and was included in the count of 28, until it was identified that COVID-19 was not that person’s cause of death.
With 24 new cases in the past five days, Whatcom County has now reported 33 new positive tests in the eight days since Sunday, April 26. In the full week prior (April 19-25) the county only saw 12 new cases.
The county health department reported 133 more negative test results Sunday, bringing the total to 2,782.
The most affected group is adults 30-39, who represent about 15% of cases. The next-most affected group is adults 80-89 who account for about 14% of confirmed cases.
Women represent 59% of confirmed cases in the county. However, men represent 56% of total deaths.
Adults 60 years and older represent 45% of the confirmed cases. All deaths have been from adults aged 60-99.
More than 3.4 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 245,000 deaths as of Sunday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has more than 1 million confirmed cases — the most reported cases of any nation — with at least 64,283 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Overall, the Washington State Department of Health reported 15,003 cases and 830 deaths Saturday evening.
