Whatcom County continues to see coronavirus spread with 3 new cases reported Saturday
The number of residents to test positive for COVID-19 continued to grow, the Whatcom County Health Department reported Saturday, May 2, as three new cases were diagnosed. But no deaths related to the coronavirus were reported.
The county now has 314 confirmed cases and 28 related deaths, according to health department statistics.
With 21 new cases in the past four days, Whatcom County has now reported 30 new positive tests in the seven days since Sunday, April 26. In the full week prior (April 19-25) the county only saw 12 new cases.
The county health department reported 216 more negative test results Saturday, bringing the total to 2,649.
The most affected group is adults 30-39, who represent about 15% of cases. The next-most affected group is adults 80-89 who account for about 14% of confirmed cases.
Women represent 59% of confirmed cases in the county. However, men represent 56% of total deaths.
Adults 60 years and older represent 45% of the confirmed cases. All 28 deaths have been from adults aged 60-99.
More than 3.3 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 241,000 deaths as of Saturday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has more than 1.1 million confirmed cases — the most reported cases of any nation — with at least 64,283 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Overall, the Washington State Department of Health reported 14,637 cases and 824 deaths Friday afternoon.
