Whatcom reports 5 positive tests linked to coronavirus, no deaths Sunday

Five more Whatcom County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, the Whatcom County Health Department announced on Sunday, April 26, but no new deaths related to coronavirus were reported.

The county has now had 289 residents test positive and 27 deaths related to the respiratory illness. Also, 1,997 tests for COVID-19 in the county have returned negative.

Whatcom continues to see a slowing in the spread of the disease. Since 11 new cases were announced on April 11, the county has averaged fewer than two new COVID-19 cases per day.

Adults aged 80-89 years old are the most affected group, representing 14% of confirmed cases. The next most affected group are both adults aged 30-39 and 40-49, who each represent 14% of confirmed cases.

Adults 80 years and older represent about 24% of the confirmed cases. All 27 deaths in the county have been from adults 60 years and older, with 44% of deaths from those aged 90-99.

Women represent 60% of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county. However, men have accounted for 56% of deaths.

More than 2.9 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 205,000 deaths as of Sunday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has more than 895,700 confirmed cases — the most reported cases of any nation — with at least 50,439 deaths.

Overall, the Washington State Department of Health reported 13,319 cases and 738 deaths as of Saturday evening.
