Another Shuksan Healthcare resident dies from coronavirus, nursing home says Wednesday

A fifth resident at Shuksan Healthcare Center who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, the Bellingham nursing home announced in a release on Wednesday, April 1.

The resident, who was in their 90s, died at the Bellingham nursing home on Tuesday, March 31. No additional information was provided about the resident.

“Our hearts are with this family at this difficult time,” Shuksan said in a release.

In addition to the five residents who have died at the facility, a sixth person was released from Shuksan on March 10 and died at home on March 20. One day later, results revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier Wednesday, the Whatcom County Health Department reported eight deaths and 144 confirmed cases in Whatcom County.

Another two staff members also have tested positive — for a total of 22, according to Shuksan, which says it is fully staffed nevertheless.

Shuksan said Wednesday that it now has 27 residents who have tested positive from the 31 remaining at the nursing home.

One resident who tested negative left Shuksan to go home and will be cared for by family.

“Residents are not prohibited from leaving our care, but both the resident and their family members caring for them will be in a quarantined location for 14 days per Department of Health guidelines,” Shuksan said in the release.

On March 22, the Whatcom County Health Department announced the outbreak at Shuksan, 1530 James St.
