Shuksan Healthcare Center announces another resident dies from coronavirus Monday
Shuksan Healthcare Center announced that another resident who tested positive for COVID-19 died Monday evening, March 30. It is the fourth resident to die at the Bellingham nursing home due to the new coronavirus.
The resident who died Monday was in their 70s, according to a release from Shuksan. No other information was provided about them.
“Their family has been notified, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time,” the release stated.
The resident becomes the eighth in Whatcom County who tested positive for COVID-19 to die, according to totals provided by the Whatcom County Health Department and Shuksan.
A 20th staff member at the facility also has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the release.
That additional positive test raises the number of people at the nursing home to contract the respiratory illness to 53 — 33 residents and 20 employees. Of the 33 residents still at the facility, according to numbers provided by Shuksan on Sunday, 28 have tested positive.
The Whatcom County Health Department on March 22 announced the outbreak at Shuksan.
In addition to the four residents who have died at the facility, a fifth person was released from Shuksan on March 10 and died at home on March 20. One day later, a test revealed that he also had tested positive for COVID-19.
