Port of Bellingham closes some park, event areas to help stop spread of coronavirus
The Port of Bellingham has closed down some parks and event areas in its efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
The Bellingham waterfront bike park, the playground at Zuanich Park, workout stations along the Squalicum promenade, the picnic shelter at Fairhaven’s Marine Park, and Jorgensen Pier in Blaine have all been closed, according to a Wednesday, March 25 news release.
In the news release, the port said it was just too difficult for people to maintain social distancing guidelines in those areas. Most other port-managed parks, trails and open spaces remain open. People who choose to enjoy these amenities should practice social distancing of a minimum of six feet at all times to protect themselves and others.
Under Washington’s ”Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order, residents are allowed to go outside for a walk or a bike ride as these activities are considered essential for physical and mental health.
For those who choose not to obey the closure order, the port has regular security patrols who will notify the police if necessary.
“Hopefully people take this seriously and it does not become an issue,” said Mike Hogan, spokesman for the port.
