You need a routine, experts tell older adults stuck at home because of coronavirus
Health experts have some new advice for older adults stuck at home because of coronavirus.
Although most people who get infected with COVID-19 will have minor symptoms, older adults and those with underlying health conditions like diabetes and heart or lung disease are at a higher risk of getting very sick, McClatchy News previously reported.
Officials have urged everyone to stay home as much as they can, and many bars, restaurants and other public places across the country have closed or changed their services to slow the spread of the virus.
Taking precautions to avoid COVID-19 is especially important for older adults and those at a higher risk.
During an outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends older adults stay home as much as possible. It’s also important to avoid crowds, unnecessary travel and sick people.
But staying home so much can be tough.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization posted advice for older adults who are stuck at home.
It’s important to keep your regular routines and schedule as much as possible while home, the post said. You can also create new routines if in a new environment.
These routines can include exercising, cleaning and daily chores, singing, painting and any other activities you enjoy, the WHO says.
The CDC has said it’s important to clean and disinfect your home often amid the outbreak.
You also need to be prepared and know how to get help if you need it, WHO says. This can include calling a taxi, having food delivered to you or getting medical care.
Previously, the CDC suggested older adults and those at a higher risk be stocked on essentials, such as food staples, prescription and over-the-counter medications and other household supplies just in case.
Other experts have some general advice about being stuck at home or quarantined.
Going outside if possible, video chatting with loved ones, reading, and meditation are other good ideas, The News & Observer reports.
