Chuckanut Brewery to try out local malt during Bellingham Beer Week

Chuckanut Brewery is using Skagit Valley Malt from barley grown in Skagit Valley and malted in Burlington.

The brewery will introduce a beer called Local Malt Alt on Friday, Sept. 12 during Bellingham Beer Week and Eat Local Month. The German style beer will be available on a limited basis at the brewery and the Cliff House on Monday, Sept. 15. The Alba barley used in the Local Malt Alt is grown by Roozen Farm, also known as the Skagit Bulb company.

According to a news release, the farmers are looking for ways to make their farms more sustainable and are growing barley and wheat as their cover crop to sell instead of mulching back into land to replenish it.
