Starbucks is offering a limited-time deal to sweeten its revamped rewards program, which launches Tuesday, April 12.
The revamped program had drawn online ire from people who said it would make it harder for them to earn rewards.
The company said this week that anyone who makes a purchase in a Starbucks store from April 12 to May 2 automatically earns gold status for the year. Those who are already gold members will have their gold status extended for another year.
Customers need to reach gold member status before being eligible to receive rewards such as free menu items.
The company announced earlier this year that it would replace its system of rewarding customers based on frequency of visits with one based on dollars spent.
The change makes it harder for those who buy less-expensive items to get rewards but easier for those who spend more per visit.
Though many customers were incensed with the change, Starbucks said sign-ups accelerated after the announcement, with 500,000 people joining the rewards program
Along with the launch of the revamped program Tuesday, the company also redesigned its iPhone and Android mobile app. With the new app, customers will be able to redeem Starbucks rewards through the company's mobile order & pay system.
