Bank of the Pacific is closing two of its branches, one of which is in Whatcom County.
The bank is planning a Feb. 12 closing of the Ferndale branch, which is at 1860 Main St. The other Washington branch slated to close is in Ilwaco, near Long Beach, according to a company news release.
One factor for the closures is to better meet the needs of customers who are doing more banking online and visiting branches less often, said Denise Portmann, president and CEO of the bank. She said the bank has had good success in the adoption of its online features such as its mobile app.
“Although the face-to-face time we get with our customers is priceless, consumer demographics... are undergoing significant changes,” Portmann said.
The Ferndale branch has four employees, and Portmann said they are working with those employees to see if there are opportunities within the company in the coming months. After the closure, the bank will have three branches in Whatcom County, two in Bellingham and one in Lynden.
“In no way is this (branch closure) a reflection on the employees,” Portmann said.
