2027 Chevy Silverado And GMC Sierra May Get Bigger, Stronger V8s
Silverado Power Rumors Grow
Earlier reports suggested that the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra could receive General Motors' new Gen 6 small-block V8 engines, which are expected to be offered in larger displacements than the units they will replace. That raises the question of whether a performance boost is in store, or just how much, and GM Authority may have an answer.
According to the publication, citing unconfirmed rumored power figures, the new Gen 6 5.7-liter V8 could produce 400 horsepower. That's about 45 horsepower more than the current 5.3-liter L84. Meanwhile, the more potent Gen 6 6.6-liter V8 could deliver roughly 475 horsepower, representing a 55-horsepower increase over the current 6.2-liter L87.
The V8 Story Continues
At least on paper, more power could improve the towing capability of the 2027 Silverado and Sierra, making them even better suited for workhorse duties. For enthusiasts, the added output could also make the trucks feel more responsive and enjoyable to drive. On the other hand, increased displacement could result in lower fuel economy and make meeting emissions regulations more challenging.
However, the current regulatory environment appears more favorable toward combustion-powered vehicles than the previous administration's EV-focused approach, which could ease some pressure on larger-displacement engines.
Beyond the performance boost, prospective buyers may place greater emphasis on reliability, especially given the scrutiny surrounding the L87 due to engine failure concerns linked to bearing-related issues. The L87 has also been the subject of class-action litigation, though reports suggest GM is implementing production changes to help ensure the new powertrains offer higher quality and durability from the outset.
Production Is Getting Closer
Whether these rumored power figures prove accurate remains to be seen. However, the Gen 6 small-block V8 family has already demonstrated its performance potential, as evidenced by the new Corvette Grand Sport, whose LS6 V8 belongs to the same engine family and produces 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. That is up to 40 horsepower more than the outgoing LT2 V8.
Not to digress, production of the next-generation Silverado and Sierra could reportedly begin in October 2026. They are also expected to feature a boxier appearance based on leaked design patents, an approach that has become increasingly common among full-size pickups, including the Ford F-150.
