Seattle-based cryptocurrency exchange allowed to resume full operations
The Seattle-based cryptocurrency company linked to multiple bitcoin ATMs in Whatcom County has resumed full operations in the state following a temporary cease-and-desist order by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI).
Coinme announced Tuesday that it reached an agreement with DFI after the company submitted financial records that “clarified key facts” about the company’s business practices.
DFI alleged earlier this month that Coinme claimed more than $8 million owed to customers as its own income and violated the Uniform Money Services Act.
The company’s cryptocurrency can be accessed at kiosks like Coinstar and ReadyCode ATM, which are located in Whatcom County grocery stores, including Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden and Blaine sites. Customers can use these kiosks to purchase paper vouchers to be redeemed as cryptocurrency on Coinme’s website or mobile app, according to DFI.
“Our commitment to customer protection and regulatory compliance remains our top priority,” said Neil Bergquist, CEO of Coinme. “We’re grateful to the WA DFI for addressing this during a busy holiday season. We look forward to working with the WA DFI to preserve our long-standing collaborative relationship that has been in place since our inception in 2014.”
