Skagit Valley tulip farm closing permanently as competitor takes over operations

A popular Skagit Valley tulip farm about a 35-minute drive down Interstate 5 from Bellingham recently announced it is closing at the end of the year following a sale of the business.

Skagit Acres, a garden center, tulip farm and holiday gift shop, announced its closure in a Dec. 10 news release after Van Wingerden Greenhouses of Blaine purchased the business.

Van Wingerden will take over the physical property of Skagit Acres, and the business’ operations and holiday activities will be taken over by another Skagit Farm, Tulip Town.

“Beginning spring 2026, Skagit Acres’ most cherished experiences, including its curated holiday gift shop and beloved Santa photo sessions, will find a new home at Tulip Town, one of Skagit Valley’s most iconic destinations,” the news release states.

“Many of the activities that previously took place at Skagit Acres will be absorbed into Tulip Town’s operations. Skagit Acres will no longer exist,” a spokesperson for Tulip Town told The Herald.

Tulip Town will continue operations only at its original location, as Van Wingerden Greenhouses will use the Skagit Acres property to expand its own business.

“This transition lets us reimagine Tulip Town as a year-round experience, not just a seasonal stop. We can’t wait to share what’s coming,” Tulip Town Owner Rachael Sparwasser said in the release.

Skagit Acres will close Dec. 31 but will continue to offer Santa photos and operate the holiday shop and the garden center throughout its final weeks.

“It’s a final opportunity to soak in the magic, stock up on holiday treasures, and take home something special before we turn the page. With big savings throughout December, we’re sending off this space with gratitude, and giving guests every reason to celebrate what’s next at Tulip Town,” General Manager Marisa Schwabe said in the news release.

Skagit Acres will remain open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday at 18923 Peter Johnson Rd. in Mount Vernon through Dec. 31.

Van Wingerdren Greenhouses plans to reopen the Skagit Acres property as a retail garden center in March, an expansion of their Blaine business, according to a Facebook post from the company.

Tulip Town is one of Skagit County’s most popular tulip farms. It’s “the very first tulip farm in Skagit Valley,” according to its website.

In 2026, Tulip Town is planning to host its regular tulip season offerings, as well as seasonal markets, events, workshops, and holiday Santa photos, according to the news release.

“This is about growth, creativity and community,” Sparwasser said. “We’re creating a place that reflects everything people love about Skagit Valley, and gives them more reasons to visit, again and again.”

Tulip Town will reopen for the Skagit Valley tulip season in the spring.
