Port of Bellingham announces $45 million project after receiving federal grant
The Port of Bellingham announced a $45 million improvement plan for the Bellingham Shipping Terminal, after being awarded a national grant.
A news release on Monday, June 24 announced about $90 million in grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program would be given to Washington state, including $17.931 million to The Port of Bellingham.
“The Port of Bellingham is a crucial link in our state’s supply chains, and renovating this terminal with RAISE funding is going to help it serve our communities even more effectively. This grant from the RAISE program I established will help the Port re-establish a rail connection at the port—meaning cargo can be loaded from port to rail with far more safety and efficiency,” Senator Patty Murray said in the news release.
“Over the next 2 years, we’ll be investing 45 million dollars in infrastructure improvements to the Bellingham Shipping Terminal; including dredging to 35ft, new decking, fender piles, fenders and a modern rail connection to serve multiple cargo types. With 23 acres and 80,500 sf of warehousing space available, we’re ready to expand commerce opportunities,” The Port wrote in a the Facebook post on Monday, June 24.
“Connecting the Port of Bellingham to the rail line opens the port up to new customers that rely on rail access. This project will also supercharge the local maritime industry, which supports 6,000 jobs in Whatcom County,” U.S. Sen. Cantwell said in the news release.
The Port of Bellingham did not announce a starting date for the project.
