Census is looking for hundreds of Whatcom workers. Here’s how much they will pay
The federal government is recruiting temporary census takers for Whatcom County as it gears up for the 2020 count.
The U.S. Census Bureau plans on hiring hundreds of workers just for Whatcom County, paying $18.50 an hour, according to a news release from the agency.
The positions are for its Nonresponse Followup Operation, which counts people in person at housing units that have not responded to the questionnaire. This is done to ensure a complete and accurate count.
Applications for these positions are done online at 2020census.gov/jobs.
The questionnaires are sent out to Washington residents in March, so work in these jobs would begin in May, said Toby Nelson of the U.S. Census Bureau.
The number of temporary workers needed will depend on how many people don’t respond to the questionnaire. The positions are designed to last eight weeks, plus training.
“We’re open to hiring people on a part-time or full-time basis,” Nelson said in an email, adding that many of these positions are particularly suited to college students and recent retirees.
