Carnival Cruise Line faces man overboard tragedy, stuck anchor

Just a few days after a Carnival cruise passenger died in a tragic mobility scooter accident at Carnival's Celebration Key, another Carnival cruise passenger has died during a Celebration Key cruise.

In the sixth man overboard incident to occur on a cruise ship this year, a Carnival cruise passenger died after jumping overboard as his cruise ship sailed from Carnival's private destination in The Bahamas on May 13.

The tragedy follows a heartbreaking incident where a crew member jumped overboard from a Norwegian cruise ship sailing from Boston in April, as well as another where a passenger died after falling from her stateroom balcony to a lower deck on board Carnival Firenze.

Although deaths from cruise ship balcony falls are alarming, it's important to keep in mind that they typically result from individuals intentionally climbing high railings designed to prevent accidental falls.

While crew members on one Carnival cruise ship conducted a search-and-rescue operation in The Bahamas, crew members on board a Carnival ship visiting Belize were tackling an anchor problem that delayed the ship's departure from the port by several hours.

Doug Parker shared more details on Carnival's man overboard incident and stuck anchor situation, and more cruise news, on the May 14 edition of Cruise News Today.

Man jumps overboard from balcony on Carnival cruise ship

Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.

Good morning, here's your cruise news for Thursday, May 14th.

A passenger has died after going overboard from Carnival Liberty during a cruise in The Bahamas.

According to Carnival Cruise Line, the man apparently climbed over his stateroom balcony and jumped into the water while the ship was sailing from Celebration Key to Nassau, Bahamas on Wednesday night.

Crew members immediately launched a search and rescue operation, throwing a life ring into the water before eventually recovering the guest. However, he did not survive the jump.

The ship briefly stopped during the rescue before continuing its voyage to Nassau. Carnival says support is being provided to the guest's family who were traveling on board with him.

The incident comes just weeks after a crew member jumped off Norwegian Breakaway off the coast of Cape Cod. This is the sixth man overboard in 2026.

Stuck anchor delays Carnival Dream cruise ship in Belize

And Carnival Dream got a little too attached to Belize after an anchor problem left the ship stranded offshore for multiple hours.

"We are still experiencing an issue with retrieving the ship's anchor and our engineers are working on the matter."

That was the captain there, and guests on board told our tip line that the ship was unable to depart Belize City Wednesday evening after the anchor became stuck while offshore at the tender port.

The anchor issue was eventually resolved, and according to marine tracking data, Carnival Dream eventually departed at approximately 10:35 local time, about five hours behind schedule.

Detained Ambassador cruise ship cleared after norovirus outbreak

And a cruise ship detained over a norovirus outbreak has now been cleared to resume normal operations in France. Ambassador Cruise Line's Ambition has been released by French health officials after the ship was temporarily held in Bordeaux over a gastrointestinal illness outbreak.

Passengers are now being allowed ashore after testing determined that the illness on board was caused by norovirus. The cruise line says that no serious cases have been reported and confirmed that a 92-year-old passenger who died during the voyage was not believed to be connected to the outbreak.

Enhanced cleaning and health protocols remain in place and the ship is expected to continue its itinerary without any further changes.
