Meals on Wheels receives $54,000 from Subaru, Dewey Griffin

Whatcom Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels and More Program, which provides meals and other nutrition services to seniors, recently received a $19,335 donation from Dewey Griffin Subaru and a $35,000 grant from Subaru of America.

For its annual “Share the Love” event, Subaru of America donated $250 for every new Subaru sold between Nov. 20, 2014, and Jan. 2, 2015. The choice of where the $250 went was up to each customer, from a list of four national charities and from one local charity chosen by the dealership. Dewey Griffin Subaru of Bellingham chose Meals on Wheels and More as its local charity.

That effort raised $19,335 for Meals on Wheels, which supports seniors in Whatcom and San Juan counties by delivering meals to older homebound adults, by serving senior meals at community centers and senior housing, and by providing nutrition education and nutrition case management. All meals are provided on a donation basis.

In addition, the national Meals on Wheels America lets local members apply for grants from funds donated by Subaru of America. Whatcom County’s Meals on Wheels received the largest grant, $35,000.

Dewey Griffin employees also contribute to the Meals on Wheels and More Program by serving lunch at Bellingham Senior Activity Center every Wednesday, and by marching with the charity in Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
