Retail roundup: Bellingham gets steady stream of national retailers

It’s been a busy few months in Bellingham when it comes to major national retail openings.

Along with Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle, the Burlington clothing store, and Taco Bell opening this fall, Safeway opened its grocery store and gas station at Sunset Square on Feb. 6.

One more major national retailer is scheduled to open in April at Bellis Fair: Designer Shoe Warehouse, which is taking up a major portion of the former movie theater space at the mall.

In total, that’s nearly 150,000 square feet of retail space filled in a six-month period.

•  Along with national retailers, plenty of regional and local entrepreneurs opened the past few months in Whatcom County, including the Trampoline Zone, Hops ’N Headz, Maikham, Electric Beet Juice Co., Edaleen Dairy store in Blaine, Shake & Shine, and Burrito King.

And Grocery Outlet is in the midst of putting in a new store in Ferndale. The store is expected to be ready mid-year 2015.

•  It’s also been a time for business closures, with several well-known places closing the past few months. Closures include Babe’s Place in Ferndale, Baskin Robbins, Ferndale Cost Cutter, The Fountain, Taco Del Mar, Extreme’s Sports Grill in Fairhaven, Bead Bazaar and Cold Stone Creamery.
