David Beckham Shuts Down Question About Family Drama With Son Brooklyn
David Beckham refused to address his family drama with son Brooklyn Beckham in a recent interview.
"To be honest, I'm sorry to stop you there, but that's a private matter," David, 51, told Variety when the subject was broached in an interview published on Friday, June 12. "That's the one thing that I don't want to talk about."
The soccer icon spoke to the outlet in celebration of receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday.
While Brooklyn, 27, lives nearby in Beverly Hills with wife Nicola Peltz, he was nowhere to be found as David's friends - including Tom Cruise - and family celebrated the prestigious honor. David posed in front of his Hollywood star along with wife Victoria Beckham, their sons Romeo Beckham, 23, and Cruz Beckham, 21, and daughter Harper Beckham, 14.
There have been reports of a rift within the family for years, dating back to Peltz not wearing a Victoria Beckham wedding dress for her April 2022 nuptials. Various social media snubs led up to Brooklyn finally addressing the situation in January with a scathing statement.
"I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private. Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed," Brooklyn wrote in a January 20 Instagram Story. "I do not want to reconcile with my family. I'm not being controlled, I'm standing up for myself for the first time in my life."
Brooklyn insisted that his parents "controlled narratives in the press" about their family throughout his "entire life."
"The performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into," he alleged. "Recently, I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that they'll go through to place countless lies in the media, mostly at the expense of the innocent people, to preserve their own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out."
He confirmed longstanding rumors of tension between Peltz, 31, and his parents, accusing the Beckhams of "trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding." Members of the Beckham family allegedly told Brooklyn that Peltz was "not blood" and "not family" on the eve of his wedding.
"I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life," he concluded. "I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared. I wake up every morning grateful for the life I chose, and have found peace and relief. My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation. All we want is peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family."
David gave a TV interview to CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos hours after Brooklyn released his statement but only offered a cryptic response about children making mistakes on social media.
"I've always spoken about social media and the power of social media - for the good and for the bad," he told Squawk Box on January 20. "What kids can access these days, it can be dangerous. But what I've found personally, especially with my kids as well: Use it for the right reasons."
He went on, "I've been able to use my platform for my following, for UNICEF. And it's been the biggest tool to make people aware of what's going on around the world for children. And I've tried to do the same with my children, to educate them. They make mistakes. Children are allowed to make mistakes. That's how they learn. So, that's what I try to teach my kids, but you have to sometimes let them make those mistakes as well."
That same day, David had no response when reporters directly asked him if he had "a message for Brooklyn" and questioned whether he was "disappointed [that] family business is being aired in public."
Victoria, 52, broke her silence on the family feud by telling the Wall Street Journal in April that she and David both "love our children so much."
"We've always tried to be the best parents that we can be," she added. "And you know, we've been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we've ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And you know, that's all I really want to say about it."
Victoria was asked in a separate Today interview in April about the Beckhams weathering "a very public and challenging year."
"Myself and David, we're so close," Victoria said. "And we have incredible people around us. We're very close to my parents and David's parents, and we support each other through everything that we do."
