We asked readers which Whatcom County bakery had the best cheesecake, and the votes are in.

The poll had seven options including local favorites in Whatcom County such as Pure Bliss Desserts, Chuckanut Bay Foods and Slice of Heaven Bakery and Cafe. The poll received 250 votes total.

Winning with 102 votes was Chuckanut Bay Foods.

Chuckanut Bay Foods makes mini-cheesecake, cheesecake bites, vegan cheesecake and petite bite-sized cheesecakes in over 40 flavors.

Whether you are craving traditional New York cheesecake or want to explore flavors such as mango, maple pecan, strawberry margarita, chocolate truffle, espresso, hot buttered rum or raspberry lemonade, Chuckanut Bay Foods likely has a flavor for everyone.

The family owned bakery started in 1992 and was originally named Chuckanut Cheesecake.

“Inspired by the magnificent beauty of our Chuckanut Bay region, our desserts feature fresh, natural ingredients from farms and dairies throughout the Western United States and Canada,” the bakery’s website states.

The bakery is transparent about where ingredients come from, sharing a full list of suppliers on their website to assure customers know just how fresh the cheesecake really is.

Each cheesecake is made from scratch without high-fructose corn syrup or artificial colors or flavors, and includes ingredients such as real butter, local fruits, real non-GMO cane sugar and flour and 100% RBGH-free cream cheese. RBGH is a genetically engineered hormone used to increase cows’ milk production.

Chuckanut Bay Food’s cheesecakes are available in grocery stores across the country, and in local chain stores such as Haggen’s, Fred Meyer, Safeway, QFC and Whole Foods Market.

In second place was Pure Bliss Desserts with 68 votes.

The local bakery serves desserts such as cakes, muffins, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, tarts and cheesecakes, as well as espresso, wine, beer and ciders.

Their classic New York cheesecake is available year-round, but the bakery also has rotating monthly flavors such as honey lavender in May, and strawberry swirl cheesecake in June.

The bakery is known for its delicious cakes that come in flavors such as chocolate salted caramel, sweet almond, lemon bliss, peanut butter chocolate and caramel macaroon. May’s monthly flavors are Mexican chocolate and raspberry lemonade, and June’s upcoming featured flavors include a seasonal berry shortcake and chocolate lavender.

The shop also offers happy hour specials where visitors can enjoy $1 off in-house cake slices, $1 off tap beer, cider and wine, and 10% off bottles of wine.

Pure Bliss Desserts is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and is located in Bellingham at 1424 Cornwall Ave. Happy hour is available from 5-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The poll choice “other” received 43 votes, followed by Slice of Heaven Bakery and Cafe with 25 votes, and Icing on the Cake, Samish Bay Cheese and 5b’s Bakery closely following.
