People can get an overview of first aid for day hikers and backpackers at a free “First Aid Essentials –What’s In Your Kit?” class from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the REI store in Sehome Village shopping center, near Samish Way and Bill McDonald Parkway.

People will learn the basic components of a medical kit and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a prepared kits versus a do-it-yourself kit. The class is seen as excellent preparation for the 16-hour Wilderness First Aid class, but does not provide a certification. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

About 15 spots remained in the class this week.
