“Midnight Special” — A Michael Shannon-starring drama that announces the arrival of Jeff Nichols as a filmmaker in total control of his technique as well as our emotions. “Miles Ahead” — Is it easier to create a brilliant, mesmerizing performance than to write and direct a film that convincingly contains it? Based on the evidence provided by writer-director-star Don Cheadle in this story of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, the answer would appear to be yes. (1:40) R.
