Bars and Bands: Whatever’s Clever at Shakedown
According to Whatever’s Clever Facebook page, it’s “a highly entertaining show with a variety of talented acts including belly dancing, local bands, burlesque dancing and comedy.”
Co-host Jackie Kersten says the show began in 2011 as a fundraiser for the pilot of a Bellingham-produced TV show called “The Whatever Show,” about a TV variety show trying to remain relevant in a world increasingly separated from the golden era of variety-show television. Sadly, Kersten says, the TV show wasn’t completed due to conflicting cast schedules, but Whatever’s Clever kept going strong at the Shakedown.
The next show is 9 p.m. Sunday, March 27. Kersten’s new co-host is Joel O’Conner. The gig is a medical-expenses benefit for Victor Gotelaere, a longtime contributor to Bellingham’s music scene. Performers include Downers Grove, belly dancer Anyelle, Tony Garcia, poet Robert Lashley, autoharpist Tee King, and Butch Tuffington.
Moongrass now two bands
Willie Reavis and His Weary Boys is a new ’50s-style country, rockabilly and Western swing group. Made up of members of the recently disbanded Moongrass, the Ferndale band plays both original songs and standards. Reavis’ sound harkens back to Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Elvis Presley, and Woody Guthrie, and to more recent country and folk artists like Jonny Fritz, Nikki Lane, and Pokey LaFarge. Catch Willie from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Kulshan Brewing Co., 2238 James St., and April 16 at Avalon Records to celebrate record store day. The other members of Moongrass are now Local Ghost and play with The Rusty Cleavers and The Sky Colony, at 9 p.m. Friday, March 26, at The Shakedown, 1212 N. State St.
Harmonic bands at Green Frog
Los Angeles trio The Wild Reeds, fronted by Kinsey Lee, Mackenzie Howe and Sharon Silva, dip in and out of multiple genres — some etherial folk, a hint of country twang, and rock ’n’ roll rhythm. They’re joined by Seattle’s St. Paul de Vence, whose sound is reminiscent of Crosby, Stills & Nash, at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at The Green Frog, 1015 N. State St. Tickets are $10 at Brown Paper Tickets.
Johnny Rivers at The Skagit
Johnny Rivers, who began playing professionally at age 14, performs at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 25 and 26, in The Pacific Showroom at Skagit Valley Casino Resort, 5984 N. Darrk Lane, Bow. His first single, “Hey Little Girl,” came out in 1957. His first No. 1 single, “Memphis,” was recorded at the world famous “Whisky a Go Go” in 1964. Tickets: $55 general, $60 preferred.
