Music: Jonathan Byrd and Jordie Lane play the Green Frog

Seventh-generation North Carolinian Jonathan Byrd plays with his band, the Pickup Cowboys, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Green Frog, 1015 N. State St.

Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church, where his father preached and his mother played piano. Best known for his narrative tales of love, life and death in America, he performs solo and accompanies himself in a variety of traditional acoustic guitar styles, including flat-picking.

He calls the Pickup Cowboys his “twang” band. His latest recording, from November 2014, is “You Can’t Outrun the Radio.”

Australia’s Jordie Lane opens. Tickets are $12 through Brown Paper Tickets.
