The Commanders Jazz Ensemble, part of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis Air Force Base in California, performs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 at Maritime Heritage Park, Holly Street and Central Avenue. The concert is free.

The band carries on the American tradition of the great traveling big bands under the direction of Master Sgt. Jeremiah True, playing the music of jazz legends Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Count Basie, as well as such contemporary big band leaders and composers Gordon Goodwin and Maria Schneider, with a tribute to the late Maj. Glenn Miller and his famous Army Air Corp band.

The U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West is the only active duty Air Force band west of the Rockies. More on the band: bandofthegoldenwest.af.mil.
