Infamous Las Vegas Restaurant Shuts Down, Owner Blames 'Corporate Greed' for 'Loss of Swagger'
The original Las Vegas home of the octuple-bypass burger, a 20,000-calorie sandwich in name only, is history. Owner Jon Basso has permanently closed the doors of the legendary Heart Attack Grill on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street.
But Basso did not pack up quietly. He chose to burn the bridge on his way out of town.
In a scorched earth exit statement posted to the restaurant's website, Basso went directly after the casino conglomerates dominating the modern tourist corridor.
"The Heart Attack Grill will not be renewing its long term lease. This decision stems from the reality that major casinos have intentionally priced the average person out of the quintessential American experience of affordable indulgence. The soul of Las Vegas has been replaced by corporate greed." Basso made it clear that the changing focus of the city no longer aligns with his brand.
"Our core value, "eat big and laugh loud," no longer fits a city peddling forty-dollar "artisanal avocado toast." The honest, heavy-duty calories that built our reputation are now considered gauche by a city that has excluded the middle class and lost its swagger in the process."
Before walking away, Basso leaned into the public health controversy that followed his restaurant for over a decade. "We're proud of our 21 year impact on America's waistline. The obesity rate has risen from 30% in 2005 to nearly 45% today, and we pat ourselves on the back for leading the charge! For those loyal to HAG, do not despair. This is not the end of the world's most controversial restaurant; it is merely the beginning of a new chapter."
Over on the restaurant's Instagram page, customers expressed panic about the sudden closure.
One fan wrote: "Still can't believe you guys will be gone. Can you tell me how long are you still going to be open for business? And what's the plan, are you gonna open somewhere else? Please! Las Vegas will never be the same again without HAG... So much fun and the burgers are so fkn good!!! And @nurserikkiofficial rocks! I can't believe this is happening."
Another commentator added: "I cannot believe you will be gone but tell us you will open for business? In other city"
Basso maintains that the brand is looking for a new spot to plant its flag outside of the current tourist ecosystem. "We are seeking new opportunities to continue our high-calorie mission. We look forward to finding new communities that still appreciate a Bypass Burger and the freedom to feast without apology."
"I'm certainly not trying to knock Las Vegas as a community," Basso later told the San Francisco Gate. "I am only telling the honest truth about the tourist sector. It has become as shortsighted of a business model as I can possibly conceive of."
