A campy 1958 cult classic devoted to rock 'n' roll energy, juvenile delinquency, and an unforgettable performance from Jerry Lee Lewis, the film was recently named the best rock movie of 1958 by Ultimate Classic Rock. Here's why.

Released June 13, 1958, the film stars Russ Tamblyn, Jan Sterling, John Drew Barrymore, and Mamie Van Doren, with Lewis appearing as himself. It follows the transfer student Tony Baker as he sniffs out the drug scene at Santa Bella High, where rich teens are hooked on marijuana cigarettes (hey, it's the '50s). But what kicks off as a cautionary tale ends up being a showcase for Lewis's explosive rock ‘n' roll performance.

"Once again, the ties between rock 'n' roll and juvenile delinquency were depicted on film," UCR writes, noting that the opening scene of the film features Lewis performing the title track from the bed of a moving truck with a flock of teenagers following close behind.

Capturing the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the early rock ‘n' roll scene at the height of the genre's cultural panic, High School Confidential! became one of the earliest films to fully embrace rock music as its identity. And that opening scene is widely considered one of the most iconic intros in early rock cinema.

Produced by Albert Zugsmith and directed by Jack Arnold, the movie was a hit at the box office, bringing in $2 million against a $6,000 budget. Its success was boosted by Lewis' track, which became a Top 40 Billboard hit.

Though critical reviews were mixed, the film's camp and sensationalism helped build a devoted cult following - including one very famous fan: Bruce Springsteen, who liked the title track so much he recorded his own version 20 years later, performing it live for the first time with E Street Band during the Darkness tour of summer 1978.

High School Confidential! is streaming on YouTube.
