Jenny Milchman, the author of “Cover of Snow,” which won the Mystery Writers of America’s Mary Higgins Clark Award, reads from her new book, “As Night Falls,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Village Books, 1200 11th St.

Milchman, who lives in the Hudson River Valley with her family, is vice president of author programming for International Thriller Writers, a member of the Mystery Writers of America and New York Writers Workshop, and the creator and organizer of Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day, which is celebrated annually in all 50 states. She teaches for New York Writers Workshop.

Her new mystery is about a woman who has a secret, one she is sure will never be revealed. Living in her dream house in an isolated area, she adores her outdoors-loving husband but has a strained relationship with her surly teenage daughter. Her idyllic life is upended when her home is invaded by two escaped prisoners, one a classic sociopath with a secret agenda and another who is slow- witted but powerful physically.
