Festival: Birch Bay beach contest for castle builders

Families, individuals, teams and businesses are invited to transform the beach at Birch Bay into a series of sandcastles and sculptures from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, for the annual Birch Bay Sandcastle Contest.

Spectators will find participants using sand, water and any other natural materials found at the beach to construct their castles and sculptures.

Judging and prizes are in the following categories:

▪ Saturday: families and groups, ages 12 and younger; high school cash for college.

▪ Sunday: individuals, businesses and masters.

Check-in for contestants is 9 a.m. both days, with judging at 3 p.m. and winners announced at 5 p.m. Construction begins at 10 a.m. on the outgoing tide and ends at 3 p.m.
