For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man behind “Sesame Street’s” Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the show’s first season — and at 81 the puppeter is still working as their puppeteer, with no intention of retiring.
A loving portrait of the man in the yellow suit, the new film, “I Am Big Bird,” features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces his journey from bullied child to childhood icon. And as the yellow feathers give way to gray hair, it’s the man, not the puppet, who steals your heart.
The film opens Friday, June 19, and runs through June 25 at Pickford Film Center, 1318 Bay St. For showtimes, call 360-738-0735 or see pickfordfilmcenter.org.
