Sounders roll past UCLA, 5-0, in first friendly

Seattle Sounders FC dismantled UCLA, 5-0, in its first competition of the new season Wednesday at Walnut, California.

Seattle’s goals came from Obafemi Martins and Lamar Neagle in the first half, Chad Barrett, Kenny Cooper and Micheal Azira in the second.

Coach Sigi Schmid’s lineup had goalkeeper Stefan Frei behind defenders Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans, Chad Marshall and Leo Gonzalez, midfielders Marco Pappa, Gonzalo Pineda, Andy Rose and Darwin Jones, and forwards Martins and Neagle.

The game marked the first time that Schmid had coached against UCLA, his alma mater and the place he coached from 1980-1998.

The Sounders will remain in Southern California until Friday, when they meet the defending MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy. Then they will return home for a week of training before leaving March 15 for four games in the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Arizona.
