NATIONAL MARINA DAY
WHAT: June 13 is National Marina Day, according to the Association of Marina Industries, and Point Defiance Boathouse Marina is getting in on the action with a day filled with activities. It plans to offer free information and instruction. Boating and fishing tutorials are on the schedule. Visitors can expect to learn how to knot and rig tying and the basics of boating safety. Free boat inspections are available, too. Those who pass the inspection will receive a sticker for their boat from the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

DIRECTIONS: From state Route 16, exit on Pearl Street and drive north to Point Defiance Park. Follow the signs to the marina.
HISTORY: The marina association started National Marina Day in 2001.
ALSO: The event flier, available on the event website, includes a coupon for 75 percent off a boat rental. The coupon is good only June 13. Boats are available on first-come, first-served basis. Visitors must register in advance for crabbing and the bottom-fishing derby. A session on crabbing will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (preregistration is required). The fishing derby is 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Fishing demonstrations and free boating safety checks begin at 10 a.m. A shrimping demo starts at 2 p.m.
