In 2013, there were 17 boating fatalities in Washington, according to the latest statistics available from the U.S. Coast Guard. The National Safe Boating Council reports that drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2013, and that 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets. The council is promoting the use of life jackets during National Safe Boating Week that runs through Friday.
