Free fishing derby for kids
in Meridian on Saturday
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1173 will host the derby May 2 at Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, 1900 Records Ave. in Meridian.
Registration is at 8 a.m. and fishing runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Age groups are 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest and smallest fish in each age group. All participants who catch six fish will be entered into a drawing for a prize. Fishing gear and bait is provided for people who don’t have it.

Learn outdoor survival skills on Saturday
A four-house course on essential skills for survival in the backcountry is May 2 and taught by Ray Vizgirdas, a field biologist and naturalist with more than 30 years’ experience in the backcountry.
“The Basics 101” is open to participants age 16 and older and meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Foothills Learning Center, 3188 Sunset Peak Road in Boise.

Course includes classroom lecture, slideshow and demonstrations. Topics include priorities and essential skills; calories and the importance of water, short- vs. long-term survival, hypothermia, emergency shelters, basic navigation and other topics.
