Weekend Getaway for April 30

WHAT: The annual May Day Metric gets a new start and finish location this year as Phil’s Bike Shop moved to a new location. The routes, however, are about the same as they’ve been in the past as they travel from Federal Way toward Mount Rainier. Cyclists can choose from 50-, 72- and 100-mile routes. Whatever the distance, expect the way to be hilly and challenging. The routes turn around in Orting, Wilkeson and the Carbon River entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, respectively.

WHERE: The start and finish will be at Jersey’s Sports Bar, 35509 21st Ave. SW, Federal Way.

WHEN: Registration opens at 6 a.m. Sunday.

ACTIVITIES: There is a finish line party at which all finishers receive a slice of pie.

GETTING THERE: From Interstate 5, take Exit 137 in Fife and travel north on 54th Avenue East as it becomes Taylor Way. Turn right on South Frontage Road and continue (as the road becomes Marine View Drive) to Norpoint Way. Turn right and continue to 28th Street Northeast. Turn right and proceed to 21st Avenue Southwest. Turn left and continue to the destination.

COST: $40 per rider. Unicyclists are free.

OF NOTE: Register at the bike shop Friday and Saturday. Race-day registration (cash or check only) is at Jersey’s Sports Bar. Portions of the proceeds benefit the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and the Orting Food Bank. Sag support provided for stranded riders. There is a rest area with snacks every 20-25 miles. The ride averages 200 participants per year.
