Outdoors by the numbers

The number of years Mishka, a Karelian bear dog, served the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Mishka has retired after helping to resolve hundreds of tense situations with bears, cougars and other wildlife, according to the agency. The dog worked with enforcement officer Bruce Richards in the Puget Sound region since 2007, when the dog’s original owner/handler, Rocky Spencer, died in a helicopter accident. Richards also is retiring this spring. The agency has five other Karelian bear dogs.
