Some of the latest outdoor gear to hit the market

More than 22,000 people recently attended the annual Outdoor Retailer Winter Market at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. Outdoor gear from more than 1,000 brands was on hand for buyers for sporting goods stores to contemplate stocking their shelves with next fall and winter. Because the public is not allowed in the trade show, the Salt Lake Tribune walked the floor looking for things that are likely to be available this year.

Here are some of the things that caught our eye:

XPot from Sea to Summit

Lightweight and compact cooking ware is obviously important when it comes to backpacking, but is not a bad idea for car campers with limited space either. Sea to Summit’s XPot and XPot Kettle are made of silicone with an aluminum base bottom. The XPot is firm when it needs to be on the stove and the table, but easily collapses for storage during the hike out and drive home. XPot comes in three sizes: 1.4 liter ($49.95), 2.8 liter ($59.95) and 4.0 liter ($79.95). The XPot Kettle is a 1.3-liter pot ($44.95). A variety of XSet kits are also available. seatosummit.com

NanoGrid from BioLite

There are seemingly a million options for lighting while enjoying the outdoors. NanoGrid has come up with what appears to be a creative option. The 3-in-1 NanoGrid comes with a PowerLight (flashight/lantern and power storage) and remote lanterns. Charge it with a USB cord connected to a standard power supply or plug it into other BioLite power-generating devices such as the CampStove, BaseCamp or KettleCharge. The PowerLight works as a remote to control SiteLights — two come with the kit. Two extra SiteLights can be purchased providing up to 40 feet of lighting. The NanoGrid provides 10 watts of power (up to three smartphone refills). The NanoGrid system, which includes the PowerLight and two SiteLights, costs $99.95. Kids are capable of carrying their own ski gear, but to make it easier, High Sierra has produced the Trapezoid boot bag. Borrowing the blueprint for the popular adult-sized boot bag, the junior version includes a large U-shaped compartment capable of holding ski boots, clothing and a lunch box. Woolverino Ninja Suit from Airblaster

Besides having one of the best outdoor gear names ever, the Woolverino is sure to keep explorers warm during winter adventures. Building on the Classic Ninja Suit, the company took it to the next level with a merino wool blend base layer suit. Woolverino is a blend of merino wool and Tencel, a man-made fiber. The result, AirBlaster execs say, is a stretchy, warm and odor-resistant garment. The Ninja Suit comes with a full-length chest zipper, thumb loops, a hood and a 350-degree waist zipper to allow for those times when Mother Nature calls. Deployment Hybrid from Black Diamond

Salt Lake-based Black Diamond continues its multiyear new apparel launch with the Deployment Hybrid hoodie or jacket. Another product featuring softshell Schoeller fabric as the exterior and PrimaLoft Hi-Loft insulation in the body and sleeves. A merino wool blend Deployment fabric is used under the arms and on the back. The idea is to reduce the need for layering by providing breathable insulation. Stash 18 backpack from Klymit

Perfect for storing anything needed for a day hike or a long urban adventure, the Stash 18-liter pack from Klymit includes Air Frame Technology and allows users to adjust the air pressure to their comfort. It has not taken long for fat tire mountain bikes to make their mark on the cycling world. Perhaps capitalizing on the surge, Under Armour is releasing the Fat Tire GTX show. If big and bold works in mud and snow, why not on your feet? The high-riser shoes include Michelin Wild Gripper outsoles sure to draw the same attention to your feet that happens with the bikes. Growler from Stanley

Bigger is better, at least in some cases. Folks looking to entertain friends on outdoor adventures should check out the 2-quart vacuum steel Growler from Stanley. Testers say it will be keep beverages cold for 16 hours and 60 hours with ice. Hot drinks will stay warm for 12 hours. Comes in the classic green or navy. Lockout boot from Forsake

The roots of this Boston-based shoe company come from the West, including Utah’s Alta Ski Resort. Forsake President Sam Barstow spent the 2008-09 ski season working at Alta before heading back East to help form Forsake. Coming this summer is the Lockout hiker with an urban look, but featuring trail technologies. Forsake partnered with Woolrich for a stylish high ankle patch and a Peak-to-Pavement outsole. Rose base layer from Kari Traa

Some may remember the name Kari Traa as the Norwegian freestyle skier who won gold in the moguls competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics. But Kari Traa is also a sportwear clothing company hatched from Traa’s habit of knitting hats for her skiing buddies during her competition years. The Rose series is a superfine merino wool base layer designed for women. The Rose line will do more than keep women warm on the outside. Bison wool socks from United By Blue

Bison do not wear socks, but they do produce something to make socks. United By Blue has produced socks combining merino wool and bison down. How would you like to be the one shearing the bison? Bison produce only 4 to 6 ounces of down annually. To utilize this warm and soft down, merino wool was combined to make the socks. The merino wool also comes from the United States, making the socks 100 percent American-made. Available in March for $38. unitedbyblue.com

Taravals sunglasses from Sunski

It is easy to get caught up in the big names in the sunglass world, but Sunski is working to keep things simple and affordable. The company is releasing two new models this spring with an attractive style, comfort and price. The Taravals are named after a surfing spot near San Francisco and include the hardy construction and eye protection the company has built its reputation on. ProStretch fleece jacket from L.L. Bean

One of the biggest criticisms of fleece is the fact that wind often easily finds its way through the material. L.L. Bean designers say the ProStretch is four times more wind-resistant than standard fleece. The ProStretch is also water-repellent and wicks away internal moisture. Available now for $89. llbean.com

Park City ski sock from Farm to Feet

Park City, Utah, might seem a long way from North Carolina, where Farm to Feet is headquartered, but the 100 percent American-made sock company likes to name products after people and companies involved with the hosiery. The new Park City medium weight sock was named in appreciation of the company’s branding and design partner, Batch 171, based in the Utah ski town. The sock is made of merino wool, nylon and elastic and comes with cushioning in the toe, heel, shin and calf areas. $24 farmtofeet.com
