1 File crabbing report

Puget Sound crab anglers must file their catch report, even if they did not catch anything, by Sunday (Feb. 1); failure to do so will result in a $10 fine when you buy this year’s endorsement; file your report at fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/wdfw/

2 Snowshoeing basics

Experienced staffers at REI will explain the basics of snowshoeing. They will focus on selecting the appropriate gear, as well as what you need and where to go to get started. 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at REI, 3825 S. Steele St., Tacoma; free. Register at rei.com/tacoma; 253-671-1938.


3 Jupiter up close

The large planet will be at its closest to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the sun. A medium-sized telescope should be able to show some details in Jupiter’s cloud bands, and a good pair of binoculars should allow people to see Jupiter’s four largest moons, which will appear as bright dots on either side of the planet this Friday.


4 Boson Harbor Pier Peer

Learn about the marine creatures that live in Puget Sound at 7 p.m. Friday. Boston Harbor Marina, 312 73rd Ave. NE, Olympia. $10 for 12 and older, children ages 6-11 that accompany an adult are free. This event is not appropriate for children younger than 6. Pre-registration required; sign up at sseacenter.org.
