White Pass ski area opening Saturday in time to celebrate icon’s 100th birthday

White Pass Ski Area plans to open Saturday, it announced via its website.

White Pass will have limited operations and will reduce lift tickets to $27, down from $62.

The opening comes just in time to honor one of the ski area’s legendary figures. Nelson Bennett, who served in the 10th Mountain Division before working as White Pass’ general manager, is celebrating his 100th birthday Saturday evening at the ski area.

According to the White Pass website friends of Bennett are invited to attend and should RSVP by calling 509-672-3101.

White Pass joins Crystal Mountain among the ranks of Western Washington’s ski areas able to open for the season.

Mt. Baker is hoping for a limited opening Sunday. Stevens Pass is hosting rope tow rail sessions Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Summit at Snoqualmie has nine inches of snow at the base, but needs more to open.
