Lassen Volcanic NP taps North Cascades for acting superintendent

Lassen Volcanic National Park’s new acting superintendent is Steve Gibbons from North Cascades National Park.

Gibbons started Nov. 1, the day after superintendent Darlene Koontz retired. He’s served as the National Natural Landmarks program coordinator in the Pacific West Region while based at North Cascades.

“I am very happy to have Steve step into this role while we work to fill the superintendent position permanently,” Regional Director Chris Lehnertz said in a prepared statement. “Steve has a lot of experience overseeing park operations, and he will help everyone get through this transition period.”

Gibbons has served as acting superintendent in for several parks, including San Juan Island and Klondike Gold Rush historical parks in Washington.

“I am very pleased to accept this position as acting superintendent of Lassen Volcanic,” Gibbons said in the prepared statement. “This is an exciting time to be in the National Park Service with all the Centennial efforts ongoing. I look forward to helping the park carry on with its work over the next several months.”
