Black Cat run takes participants through Point Defiance in the dark

The Black Cat Fun Run, set for Saturday, is the only fun run held on Five Mile Drive at Point Defiance Park after dark.

This chance for family-friendly “spookiness” is a race that features both 5-mile and 2.5-mile distances and welcome kids, pets and strollers, according to organizers with Metro Parks Tacoma.

The pre-Halloween event’s popularity is due in part to unique features like a glowing race course through the woods, a costume contest and the chance to get spooked on Five Mile Drive after dark, according to a Metro Parks news release.

Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, especially glowing, reflective or lighted costumes. Glow sticks, headlamps, flashlights and decorated strollers add to the fun and help illuminate the dark evening. Volunteers and members of the Tacoma Wheelmen’s Bicycle Club will ride the course to help light the marked course.

Both courses begin and end near the kiosk at the Pearl Street entrance to the park and both are chip-timed. An aid/water station will be located at the halfway point on the 5-mile course.

The night’s activities will begin at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine.

During the pre-race costume contest, participants will have the opportunity to show off their creations. Contest winners are chosen by the crowd’s screams, and the winners receive prizes.

The finish line party includes music, door prizes, snacks and beverages.

Entry fee is $30 for the 2.5-mile and $35 for the 5-mile and includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration closes Tuesday at midnight. Day-of-race registration is $35 for the 2.5-mile run and $40 for the 5-mile event. Sign up online at metroparkstacoma.org/black
