A new bicycle ride is coming to the South Sound on Sept. 7 thanks to the Capital Bicycling Club, the club announced Tuesday in its monthly newsletter.
The Old Gate School Ride will start at Rochester’s Historic Gate Schoolhouse, 16925 Moon Road SW, and offer 16-, 30- and 80-mile routes, according to the “Capital Bicycling Club News.”
The ride fills a void left by the cancellation of the Ride the South Sound. That ride was canceled for this year because of a shortage of volunteers.
“After the successful Two County Double Metric (in June) this year, many members requested another event ride in September to replace Ride the South Sound,” the newsletter says.

Club vice-president Shawn Stevenson, who organized a similar independent ride in the past, spearheaded the effort to make the ride happen. The club says the ride is one-year replacement for the Ride of the South Sound, but, the newsletter says, “we may or may not choose to put this event on in the future.”
Depending on the distance, cyclists can visit Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve or Independence Valley.
Preregistration for the ride is $20 and day-of-ride registration is $25.
