NATIONAL GET OUTDOORS DAY: Inaugural expo part of nationwide celebration

The Get Outdoors – Adventure Awaits Expo will make its debut Saturday on the Capitol Campus in Olympia.

Part of National Get Outdoors Day, the event will be a celebration of state parks and summer. The event will include gear giveaways, and activities such as geocaching, short hikes and equipment demos.

In addition, more than 30 booths will be set up, representing state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and recreation businesses.

The event will run from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on the Capitol Campus, 215 Sid Snyder Ave. SW, Olympia. Look for tents and booths on the grassy oval area between the Legislative Building and the Temple of Justice.

The expo is sponsored by Washington State Parks and the Washington State Parks Foundation.

While this will be the first year for the expo, this is the seventh annual National Get Outdoors Day, meant to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun at locations nationwide. This year, there will be almost 160 events across the country, up from the 138 in 2013.

Elsewhere in the region, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary will host a guided beach walk. Nicole Harris, an education specialist, will lead the walk from 9-11 a.m., starting at the Kalaloch Beach 4 trailhead.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1115 E. Fifth St., Vancouver, will host activities from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The day will include climbing, archery, fishing and a trader encampment.
