Birnel, who graduated from Meridian High School in 2015 and is now a student at the University of Washington, played with Mauro Rojas of Stockton, Calif., in the tournament and beat Jordan Barth and Justus Benson 15-13, 15-13 in the championship match. With the win, Birnel earned a spot on the U.S. National Junior team, which will compete at the World Junior Championships this fall in Mexico.
Birnel also finished third in the singles bracket, advancing to the semifinals before falling to Miami’s Kevin Vazquez 7-15, 15-7, 11-10.
