Steamers 2-0 to start 2015 rugby season

The Chuckanut Bay Steamers U-19 rugby team earned two victories to start the 2015 season.

On Saturday, Feb. 28, Cameron Scrimgeour scored with no time remaining and Jonny Reid scored the conversion from nearly 40 yards as the Steamers earned a 26-25 victory over Budd Bay of Olympia.

Reid was named the Man of the Match.

The Steamers rallied late in the second half to earn a 31-19 victory over the Seattle Vikings, the 2014 state champions on Saturday, March 7.

Reid had two trys and four conversions for Chuckanut (2-0), and Chris Hernandez and Jack Wendling had a try each. Patrick Condon was named Man of the Match.

The Steamers host Eastside of Bellevue at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Bellingham Polo Club.

WWU rugby earns win at Boise State

The Western Washington University men’s rugby club team earned a 51-24 victory Saturday, March 7, at Boise State University.

Nick Bonvich and Gio Trujillo had two trys each, and Mac Stone, Anthony Fleck, Eric McDaniel and Nate Muir had a try each.

The Vikings finish off the regular season with a home game against Eastern Washington at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 15.

Speedskating club hosting fundraiser

The Whatcom Speed Skating Club will host a fundraising event, “Evening with an Olympian” from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday March 23, at the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1207 Ellsworth Street in Bellingham.

Olympic long track skater Anna Ringsred, now a member of the club, will share her experiences at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Ticket sales will benefit the Whatcom Speed Skating Club and are available at brownpapertickets.com/event/1337123 and at whatcomspeedskatingclub.org/.

Tickets are $4 for children and $10 for adults.

Golf season ready to start for 2015

The Lake Padden Men’s Club kicks off its 2015 golf season with its“Opening Day” tournament Saturday, March 14.

The 2015 slate includes 16 weekend tournaments plus Twi-light leagues Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Full membership for $65 includes GHIN handicap service and eligibility for the events. If participants are members of another club there is an Associate Membership available for $35.

Four local soccer players honored

Washington Youth Soccer announced the Golazo Best XI honorees from the 2015 Virginia Mason U.S. Youth Soccer Washington State Championships in the Under-15 through Under-18 Boys age groups, played Feb. 21-22.

The Golazo Best XI is comprised of the top 11 performers from participating teams in each age group during the semifinal and final matches.

Waylon Uhrig, Jordan Burnel, Tyler Freedman and Lucas Amador, , all of Bellingham, were named to the team.
