Ferndale bowling takes seventh at state tournament

The Ferndale bowling team took seventh in Division II at the 50th Annual Washington State Bowling Proprieters Association (WSBPA) High School Varsity Bowling Championships on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Kenmore Lanes in Kenmore.

The two-day event welcomed 31 teams in three divisions. Bellarmine Prep, from Tacoma, won Division I with 9653 points, Mt. Spokane won Division II with 9080 points, and Bothell took Division III with 8197 points. Ferndale, coached by Jim Stack, had 8190 points.

Teams qualified for the State Championships by having one of the top average scores in their league.

Two bowlers rolled a 300 during the event, Bryan Hua from RA Long and Hayden Childs from Mountlake Terrace.

Ferndale also was voted by the bowlers as the Division II winner of the Don Peek Inspirational Team Award.

WWU Men’s rugby holds off WSU

Western Washington University’s men’s rugby team held off Washington State University for a 31-23 win on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Pullman.

WWU led 12-9 at halftime, and made five more trys in the second half to seal the win.

Nick Bonovich led WWU with two trys, and Anthony Fleck, Louie Henson and Noah Hanks each added a solo try. Nick Salimano converted three of five second-half trys for WWU.

WWU improves to 3-2 in Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference play, and hosts Eastern Washington University at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in Bellingham.

Lynden Youth Sports expands Slow Pitch offering

Lynden Youth Sports has expanded its Slow Pitch program to open it to all girls in grades 3-6 for the 2015 season.

Registration is open now and runs until March 14. Registration can be done online at, or applications can be printed from the website and sent to PO Box 10, Lynden, WA 98264.

Discounted registration for Junior Ski to Sea until April 13

Registration is open for the Junior Ski to Sea race, held Saturday, May 15, at Lake Padden Park.

The race is for kids in grades 3-8 and members of the community.

Registration can be completed on the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s website at Discounted registration is available for $150 for a team of six racers, if registered by April 13. After April 13, the cost goes up to $240 per team.
